GAME SHOOTING & CONSERVATION

National Association of Regional Game Councils

Voluntary body · 28 regional game councils

The national umbrella body for game shooting and conservation in Ireland, coordinating a network of parish gun clubs across every county.

History & heritage in Ireland

NARGC is Ireland's largest voluntary organisation involved in game shooting and conservation, coordinating 28 Regional Game Councils that represent affiliated clubs in almost every parish in the country. It receives no state funding and is financed entirely by member subscriptions.

What the practice involves

Members take part in game and target shooting, wildfowling and vermin control, and dedicate club time and funds to non-shooting conservation projects such as habitat restoration and predator control for ground-nesting birds.

Conservation & land management

NARGC established the Irish Habitat Trust in 1997 to fund conservation work, and its clubs collectively spend close to a million euro a year on non-shooting conservation projects such as hedgerow, wetland and woodcock habitat management.

Standards, legality & welfare

This pursuit is practised under Irish law and the rules of its governing body, which sets welfare, conduct and membership standards for every affiliated member. Reports of malpractice are investigated and can result in suspension or expulsion.
