STAGHOUND HUNTING
Constituent body of the Hunting Association of Ireland
Ireland's mounted staghound pack, hunting a laid line across the east of the country under rules that see its deer released and recovered unharmed at the end of the day.
One of six disciplines recognised under the Hunting Association of Ireland, the Ward Union is a historic mounted pack whose staghounds have followed a laid scent line across open country for generations.
Mounted members follow a pack of staghounds along a pre-laid line; a deer is released ahead of the hunt and, unlike wild quarry hunting, is recovered safely and returned to its herd once the hunt concludes.
Because the deer used are captive-bred and recovered unharmed, the club distinguishes its practice sharply from wild deer culling, framing it as a heritage equestrian pursuit rather than a wildlife-management activity.
This pursuit is practised under Irish law and the rules of its governing body, which sets welfare, conduct and membership standards for every affiliated member. Reports of malpractice are investigated and can result in suspension or expulsion.
