MOUNTED HARRIER HUNTING

Irish Masters of Harriers Association

Constituent body of the Hunting Association of Ireland

The governing body for mounted harrier packs in Ireland, one of six hunting disciplines coordinated nationally under the Hunting Association of Ireland.

History & heritage in Ireland

Affiliated harrier hunts operate under the association's rules, sitting alongside the Foxhounds, Beagles, Foot Harriers, Mink Hounds and Ward Union Staghounds as one of the six recognised hunting disciplines practised in Ireland.

What the practice involves

Members hunt hare from horseback with packs of harriers across a defined hunt country, following a tradition that in some counties has run continuously for generations.

Conservation & land management

Hunt countries are actively managed and preserved by members, protecting coverts, hedgerows and rough ground that double as habitat for hare and other wildlife.

Standards, legality & welfare

This pursuit is practised under Irish law and the rules of its governing body, which sets welfare, conduct and membership standards for every affiliated member. Reports of malpractice are investigated and can result in suspension or expulsion.
